What the Assessment Process Looks Like at Think and Thrive Psychology
Feb 01, 2026
Beginning an assessment can feel like a big step.
You may be noticing learning challenges, attention difficulties, social differences, or big emotions.
You may be thinking “something’s not quite right”.
You may simply want answers.
At Think and Thrive, assessment is not about labels.
It is about understanding your child clearly, reducing uncertainty, and creating a calm, practical path forward.
Here is what you can expect.
-
We begin With Understanding
Every assessment starts with a detailed consultation.
This can take place in our Bowral practice or via zoom for families further away.
During this consultation, we take time to understand:
- Your child’s background and early development
- Current learning or behavioural concerns
- Social relationships and emotional regulation
- Strengths and interests
This consultation is tailored specifically to your child. It allows us to determine which assessments are most appropriate, ensuring the process is thoughtful, targeted and evidence-informed.
This is where we listen.
You are not expected to have all the answers.
Our role is to guide the conversation and bring clarity to what may currently feel overwhelming
-
Tailored Assessment Sessions
Following the initial consultation, your child then attends a series of structured assessment sessions. The number and type of sessions are determined by the concerns discussed and the most appropriate assessment pathway for your child.
These sessions are carefully paced and supportive.
The environment is calm.
The focus is understanding patterns, not putting pressure on performance.
We look at how your child thinks, how they process information, and how this aligns with their learning and daily functioning.
-
Gather Insight Across Home and School
Children and adolescents often present differently in different environments.
Where appropriate, we gather structured information from both home and school.
This allows us to understand:
- How your child functions in the classroom
- How they manage expectations and transitions
- How attention, emotions or learning present across settings
Collaboration matters.
Strong outcomes happen when families and schools are working from the same understanding.
4. A Clear, Comprehensive Report
Following assessment, you receive a detailed written report.
This includes:
- Clear explanation of findings
- Strengths and areas of challenge
- Diagnostic considerations where relevant
- Practical recommendations for home and school
- Guidance for next steps
Reports are written to be understandable and actionable.
They are designed to support Individual Learning Plans, classroom. Adjustments and confident parenting.
5. Feedback and Next Steps
We then meet to walk through the results together.
This feedback session allows time to:
- Ask questions
- Clarify results
- Understand recommendations
- Discuss practical strategies
You leave knowing:
- What is happening
- Why it is happening
- And what to do next
Clarity reduces overwhelm.
Direction builds confidence.
Assessment Is Not About Labelling
One of the most common concerns we hear is fear of "labelling".
Assessment does not change your child.
It provides language, explanation and direction.
When children understand how they learn and process the world, they can build confidence.
When parents understand, they can move from worry to action.
